Roquetas de Mar, on the Costa Almeria in Andalusia, is well placed for enjoying hot dry days with a welcome on-shore breeze. With 30km of beach, there is plenty of room to sunbathe, swim and walk along the promenade; the traditional "paseo".
THE PLACE
Roquetas de Mar is a traditional fishing village that has expanded to accommodate the increasing numbers of holidaymakers and yet retains its original charm. The settlement itself dates back to Roman times, while the maze of narrow streets reflects its Moorish history. The tower of Santa Ana and the village walls are all that remains of the 16th century fortifications.

THINGS TO DO
The beach, two miles long, is of sand and shingle and is not over crowded. The promenade bordering the beach has many shady palm trees as well as a large number of bars and restaurants. There are good facilities for water sports including wind surfing and sailing. Land sports include horse riding, tennis and golf, with a world class 18hole Golf course in the town (Playa Serena Golf) and another just outside it (La Envia Golf), where you can get a 10%discount by quoting "sunapartment" when you book your rounds.

Families can enjoy the beach life, and there are life guards and a flag system in the Summer. Water sports enthusiasts can partake in many activities while couples can take pleasure in the relaxed atmosphere of this traditional resort. A mini road train runs around the resort. Entertainment for children includes a park with inflatables, crazy golf and a water park.

South of Roquetas de Mar is the salt lagoon and nature reserve of Las Marinas where there is a huge bird population including colourful flamingos. It is an excellent area for water sports.
WHEN TO GO
With an average of 320 days of sunshine per year, the Costa Almeria has arguably the best climate in Spain. Having a desert-like climate, there isn't much rainfall and the winters are very mild, rarely dipping below 18degreesC. It's an ideal all year round location. During the summer it rarely stays below 30 degrees C (86F). It can get very hot, but there is a lovely sea breeze in Roquetas de Mar, due to the very long beach, so it is perfect. At night time in Winter, because of the normally cloudless skies, it can drop down to about 10degreesC, but this is made up for by the sunny days that cloudless skies bring.
WEATHER FORECAST see homepage for live weather forecast.

The summer months are the most popular time to take a holiday with guaranteed sunshine, warm seas and local fiestas and fairs. Many visitors however, leave behind the dark dreary days of a typical North European winter and come to Roquetas de Mar to sample the warm winter sunshine. Spring and Autumn are very pleasant, normally with temperatures over 25degreesC.
DINING
The long promenade in Roquetas de Mar is lined with restaurants and tapas bars, all with wonderful views of the Mediterranean. Fish, fresh from the day's catch and simply cooked, features on the menu of most restaurants, and the typically Spanish restaurants by the marina offer especially good seafood. There are many restaurants serving international cuisine at reasonable prices. Local wines are pleasing to both the palate and the pocket. Tapas is often complementary when buying drinks in one of the many laid back bars. Children are always given a warm welcome in Spanish restaurants.
SHOPPING
Roquetas de Mar offers a wide choice of shopping venues. There is a large shopping centre, Gran Plaza, which has a hypermarket and lots of shops including Mango and Elle, and an outdoor market on Thursdays, as well as the usual selection of gift shops and boutiques selling holiday souvenirs including leather goods, jewellery and pottery.
